Quick answer: For a first paddle in Ireland, book a beginner lesson on sheltered water, such as Surfdock at Grand Canal Dock or BigStyle SUP in Dún Laoghaire Harbour in Dublin, or Derg Isle Adventure Centre on Lough Derg. In Cork, Atlantic Offshore Adventures and Kinsale Surf Adventures publish clear prices and group sizes. Look for qualified instructors (Canoeing Ireland or the Academy of Surfing Instructors), insurance, and a buoyancy aid and wetsuit in the price.
We opened each provider’s own website in September 2026 and only list businesses showing current information. Prices are in euro and only included where the provider displays them. Irish weather decides a lot, so most providers ask you to check conditions or call before booking.

How to choose a paddle board provider
- Qualifications: Canoeing Ireland, the governing body for paddlesport in Ireland, runs a Stand-Up Paddleboard Instructor Award. The Academy of Surfing Instructors also accredits SUP schools; its Level 1 SUP Instructor award covers teaching and rentals on flat water no more than 250m from shore. Ask what your instructor holds and whether it covers the water you will paddle.
- Insurance and safety cover: Good providers state that their courses are insured and that qualified instructors and safety cover are included.
- Group size: Look for a stated maximum. Smaller groups mean more coaching time per person.
- Kit: A buoyancy aid is essential, and a wetsuit is close to essential in Irish water. Waterways Ireland also asks all Blueway paddlers to wear a SUP leash.
- Learn before you rent: Some schools only rent boards after you have completed a learner session with them. That is a good sign, not a hassle.
Dublin
1. Surfdock Watersports, Grand Canal Dock
Location: Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 4. Offers: Beginner SUP classes on the dock, plus a watersports shop.
Surfdock runs a 1.5 hour group beginner class on the flat water of the dock, starting with dry land coaching before you go out. It costs €45 for over 16s and €30 for children aged 8 to 15, who must join with an adult, and includes a wetsuit and all safety equipment (checked Sept 2026). The class is designed to give you the skills to paddle on your own afterwards.
2. BigStyle SUP, Dún Laoghaire Harbour
Location: Coal Harbour slipway, Dún Laoghaire, with a second base at the Atlantic Lodge in County Mayo. Offers: SUP lessons, SUP rental, group events, summer camps and SUP yoga.
BigStyle SUP teaches in the most sheltered part of Dún Laoghaire Harbour and provides boards, paddles and wetsuits for rentals. It says a full safety briefing and basic instruction come before anyone heads out, and that qualified instructors and safety cover are always included. Visit Dublin notes that the operation is mobile with no changing rooms, so arrive in your swimsuit.
Shannon and Lough Derg
3. Derg Isle Adventure Centre, Scariff
Location: Carrowmore, Scariff, County Clare, on Lough Derg. Offers: Paddle boarding, kayaking, Canadian canoeing, boat hire and land activities.
Derg Isle Adventure Centre runs 1.5 hour paddle boarding sessions in which experienced instructors help you get started, standing or kneeling, before exploring the lake and nearby woodland shore. Helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles are included, and wetsuits are available on request. It describes the activity as suitable for all abilities and ages.
4. Lough Allen Adventure, Drumshanbo
Location: Lough Allen, Drumshanbo, County Leitrim. Offers: Guided paddling on the Drumshamazon trail, kayaking, outdoor activities and a spa and wellness centre.
Lough Allen Adventure leads paddles on calm lake water and along the leafy Drumshamazon trail on the Shannon Blueway. Its guest reviews mention paddle boarding on these trips, so ask about board availability when you book.
Cork
5. Atlantic Offshore Adventures, Kinsale
Location: Mobile, covering Kinsale to Cork City and beyond. Offers: SUP tours, lessons, courses and rentals, plus kayaking, coasteering and surfing.
Atlantic Offshore Adventures lists two hour SUP tours at €45 per person with a maximum of 16, two hour SUP lessons at €45 per person with a maximum of eight, and SUP rental at €20 per person for an hour (checked Sept 2026). It says it offers year-round availability, including winter, and brings more than 20 years of experience.
6. Kinsale Surf Adventures, Kinsale and Cork
Location: Kinsale Harbour Dock Beach, Garretstown on flat days, and several Cork City and coastal spots. Offers: One-to-one and group lessons, rentals, harbour tours and graded SUP courses.
Kinsale Surf Adventures runs a harbour tour past Charles Fort and James Fort and a progression of courses from Discover (beginners) to Explorer and Adventurer (advanced river and coastal paddling), plus SUP safety and SUP surfing. Its one-day Discover course was listed at €90 per person, on a course list still headed “Courses for 2023” when we checked in September 2026, so confirm the current price. Courses come with a logbook and certificate, and the school says they are fully insured and run by fully qualified SUP instructors and guides.
Cork and Mayo
7. Summer SUP and Kayak, Crookhaven and Louisburgh
Location: Gallycove Beach, Crookhaven, West Cork, and Old Head beach, Louisburgh, West Mayo. Offers: SUP learner sessions, kayaking, rentals and summer camps.
Summer SUP and Kayak is an accredited Academy of Surfing International SUP school. Everyone does a 90 minute learner session, almost all on the water and covering tides, wind and safety, before being allowed to rent. Activities are weather dependent, so the school advises calling before you book.
What a first lesson usually covers
The beginner sessions above share a similar shape. Surfdock starts with a dry land coaching session on basic technique before taking you onto the flat water of the dock. BigStyle gives a full safety briefing and basic instruction first. Derg Isle’s instructors let you start kneeling before you stand. Summer SUP’s 90 minute session is almost entirely on the water and covers tides, wind and safety. Kinsale Surf Adventures’ Discover course aims to have you paddling safely on sheltered flat water as part of a led group and able to assist in basic flat water rescues.
Where to go after your lesson
Once you can paddle confidently, Ireland’s Blueways are the natural next step. Waterways Ireland lists 21 self-guided trails on Lough Derg and quieter Stay and Play areas for novices, while the Shannon Blueway offers over 100 km of trails for canoes, kayaks and paddle boards. Waterways Ireland adds that most Lough Derg providers let you rent everything you need or bring your own equipment, so a guided paddle is an easy way to learn a new stretch of water before paddling it alone.
Before you book
Pick sheltered water for your first session, check the provider’s weather policy, and ask about instructor awards and insurance. If you plan to paddle independently afterwards on a Blueway, follow Waterways Ireland’s advice to stay close to shore, paddle in light winds and go in a group.
