Check the law before you buy. Under US Coast Guard rules, a SUP used outside a surfing, swimming or bathing area is a vessel. You must carry a USCG-approved life jacket (children 12 and under must wear one), carry a whistle or other sound device, and have a light such as a flashlight after sunset. State and local agencies can add stricter rules; Florida, for example, requires children under 6 to wear a life jacket and a white light between sunset and sunrise or in restricted visibility.
