Paddle Board Tours, Lessons and Hire in the UK: 12 Providers Worth Knowing

Quick answer: If you are new to paddle boarding in the UK, book a taster lesson with a centre whose instructors hold a British Canoeing Awarding Body or BSUPA qualification, then move on to hire or a guided tour. Good starting points include Coniston Boating Centre in the Lake District, Go Paddle on the Norfolk Broads, SUP Bristol in the city harbour and Loch Morlich Watersports in the Cairngorms.

We opened each provider’s own website in September 2026 to check what they currently offer. Businesses change their programmes every season, so always confirm dates, age limits and conditions directly before you book. Prices are only mentioned where the provider publishes them.

How to choose a paddle board provider

Instructor qualifications: In the UK the main routes are the British Canoeing Awarding Body (administered through Paddle UK and the home nation associations) and the British Stand Up Paddleboarding Association (BSUPA). The BCAB SUP Instructor award is designed for taster and starter sessions on very sheltered water, so a coastal or river journey should be led by someone with a higher leadership award. Ask what your guide holds and whether it covers the water you will be on.
Insurance: A reputable centre will say it is insured and should be happy to confirm it. BSUPA membership, for example, includes insurance for members.
Group size and supervision: Check how many people share one instructor, and whether “hire” means supervised or completely independent. Some hire centres state clearly that no one watches you on the water.
Kit included: Look for a buoyancy aid, leash and, outside high summer, a wetsuit in the price.
Weather policy: Good operators cancel or move sessions in strong wind and explain their refund terms upfront.
Licences: If you hire and paddle independently, ask whether the local licence or harbour fee is included, as Fowey River Hire’s is.

England

1. Coniston Boating Centre, Lake District

Location: Lake Road, Coniston, Cumbria. Offers: Paddleboard hire, sit on top kayaks, Canadian canoes, rowing and electric motor boats.

Set on the shore of Coniston Water with the Old Man of Coniston behind it, Coniston Boating Centre is a relaxed place to try a board for the first time, with the Bluebird Café next door. Dogs are welcome if you follow its boating guidance. Opening hours on the site were 10am to 4pm when we checked.

2. Active360, London

Location: Bases on the Grand Union Canal, plus a riverside gym at Kew Bridge. Offers: Group and private lessons, SUP, canoe and kayak rental, a SUP club, corporate events and “Paddle & Pick” litter picking sessions.

Active360 runs group sessions for learners, private lessons tailored to your ability and independent rental from its canal bases. Experienced paddlers can join the 360 SUP Club, which runs year round across three London locations, and the team can host groups of 40 or more for team events.

3. SUP Bristol, Bristol Harbour

Location: Bristol city centre harbour. Offers: Guided SUP adventures, kayak adventures and hire, a one-day intro to paddleboarding course and private group events.

Running since 2014, SUP Bristol takes beginners around the harbour with no experience needed. Groups of up to 10 can book online, and larger groups are asked to enquire. Its one-day course is a good option if you want to paddle the harbour independently later.

4. Wye Adventures and Wye Canoes, Symonds Yat

Location: Symonds Yat West, Herefordshire. Offers: Instructor-led paddlesport sessions (Wye Adventures) and self-guided canoe, kayak and paddleboard hire (Wye Canoes), half day to multi-day trips.

Wye Adventures says its staff are professional canoe and kayak instructors. Trips finish at Symonds Yat West, with shuttles to start points at Ross-on-Wye or Kerne Bridge, while the afternoon “paddle about” session starts and finishes at the centre, which suits nervous beginners.

5. Encounter Cornwall, Golant (River Fowey)

Location: Upper Fowey Estuary, Cornwall. Offers: SUP lessons and sessions, SUP performance coaching, guided kayak tours, kayak and mega SUP hire.

A family-run paddle sports centre, Encounter Cornwall states that its team are Paddle UK coaches, leaders and BSUPA instructors. Sessions explore tidal creeks and backwaters, with a focus on wildlife and conservation.

6. Fowey River Hire, Fowey

Location: Fowey town, Cornwall. Offers: SUP, kayak and self-drive boat hire, guided kayak tours and RIB trips.

Fowey River Hire gives a tide and safety briefing before independent hire, which is for experienced paddlers only, with at least one person in the group over 18. Its SUP hire page listed half day £35, full day £50 and one week £200 (GBP, checked Sept 2026), including the Fowey Harbour Commissioners licence fee. When we checked, the site said the hire shop was closing for the season on 28 September, with RIB rides running to the end of October.

7. Go Paddle, Norfolk Broads

Location: Broads National Park, Norfolk. Offers: Taster sessions, SUP hire, private sessions, dawn paddles, club nights, instructor courses and events.

Go Paddle describes itself as a certified BSUPA school and fully insured. The mix of dawn sessions, regular club nights and instructor courses makes it a good fit if you want to progress beyond a one-off lesson.

8. TheCanoeMan, Norfolk Broads

Location: Seven launch venues including Norwich, Wroxham, Coltishall, Beccles and Wayford Bridge. Offers: Canoe, kayak and SUP hire, guided trails, paddling lessons and canoe camping.

TheCanoeMan runs a network of hire centres where your kit waits for you at the venue. SUP hire is listed at venues such as Norwich, which offers a central city launch point with two hour to full day options.

9. North Norfolk Paddle Boards, Burnham Overy Staithe

Location: North Norfolk coast. Offers: Two hour taster sessions, three hour guided tours, private family sessions and group events.

North Norfolk Paddle Boards leads tours through the creeks and salt marsh of Burnham Overy Staithe harbour towards the Scolt Head Island nature reserve. Tours are aimed at more experienced paddlers. If the tide or wind is wrong, sessions move to a sheltered lake about 25 minutes’ drive away.

Scotland

10. Loch Morlich Watersports, Cairngorms

Location: Glenmore Forest Park, near Aviemore. Offers: SUP, kayak, canoe and sailing hire and sessions, plus mountain bike tours.

Loch Morlich Watersports sits right on the loch’s sandy beach below the Cairngorm mountains. It lists a 24 hour cancellation policy, and Visit Cairngorms recommends it as a place to try SUP in a supervised setting.

11. Loch Insh Outdoor Centre, Strathspey

Location: Loch Insh, at the lower end of Glen Feshie. Offers: SUP, kayaking, open canoeing, river trips, two and five day courses, and on-site accommodation.

Loch Insh Outdoor Centre listed SUP from £20 and river trips from £45 (GBP, checked Sept 2026). It also runs paddlesport instructor courses, so it suits anyone thinking about a qualification.

Wales

12. Snowdonia Watersports, Llyn Padarn

Location: Llanberis, Eryri. Offers: Paddleboard and kayak hire, plus a watersports shop.

Snowdonia Watersports hires paddleboards with a buoyancy aid and wetsuit included, listed at £35 per board for two hours, and XL boards for groups at £80 for two hours (GBP, checked Sept 2026). Be clear that this is unsupervised hire: the centre states there are no lifeguards, safety patrols or instructors watching rental customers, and that the lake gets deep quickly. Book a lesson elsewhere first if you have never stood on a board.

Before you book

Match the session to the water. Taster sessions on sheltered lakes and harbours suit first-timers, while estuary and coastal tours need tide knowledge and a guide with the right award. If you plan to paddle independently afterwards, check the UK waterways licence rules, because many English and Welsh rivers and canals need one.
