Paddle Board Tours, Lessons and Rentals in the USA: 12 Providers to Know

Quick answer: For a first paddle in the US, a short lesson on flat water is the best investment, for example with Hanalei Surf School on Kauai or Sea Trek in the San Francisco Bay Area. Florida spring outfitters such as Manatee Paddle and Crystal River Kayak Company, and Austin’s EpicSUP, make easy self-guided rentals. Ask about instructor certification (such as the American Canoe Association), insurance and group size before you book.

We opened each provider’s own website in September 2026 and only list businesses that were taking bookings or showing current information. Prices are given only where the provider shows them, in US dollars. Always check the provider’s own page for current conditions, age limits and cancellation terms.

How to choose a paddle board provider

Instructor certification: The American Canoe Association publishes SUP courses from “Level 1: Introduction to SUP” upwards, with separate instructor criteria. Providers such as Sea Trek run ACA SUP instructor courses from Level 1 to Level 3. Ask your instructor which level they hold and what water it covers.
Permits and authorisation: In national parks, commercial operators need park authorisation. Glen Canyon, for example, publishes a list of businesses authorised to give SUP instruction on Lake Powell and notes that if the list is blank, nobody is currently authorised.
Safety kit: Outside swim areas, Coast Guard rules mean every paddler needs a life jacket and a whistle. A good provider includes both.
Group size and experience rules: Look for a stated maximum group size and honest experience requirements. Night and ocean tours often require previous paddling.
Refund policy: Weather cancellations are common. Read the refund terms, especially for popular tours that are sold as non-refundable.

Hawaii

1. Hanalei Surf School, Kauai

Location: Hanalei Bay, Kauai North Shore. Offers: Private and group SUP lessons, river and ocean SUP sessions.

Hanalei Surf School runs 90 minute lessons for groups of one to four people, with larger parties asked to arrange a custom booking. Lessons run at set times through the day, and you can choose a relaxed session on the Hanalei River or ocean paddling in the bay.

2. Kayak Hanalei, Kauai

Location: Hanalei town, launching from a private dock on the Hanalei River. Offers: SUP and kayak rentals, guided kayak tours.

Kayak Hanalei rents paddleboards from 9’6″ to 12′ on a first come, first served basis, with no reservations for rentals. From the dock you can head downstream to Hanalei Bay (about 2 miles round trip) or upstream to the wildlife refuge (about 4 miles round trip).

California

3. Sea Trek, Sausalito and Alameda

Location: San Francisco Bay Area. Offers: Kayak and SUP rentals, classes, guided tours, ACA courses and night trips.

Sea Trek offers walk-in rentals at both locations and a programme of tours, including a guided bioluminescence night kayak tour on Tomales Bay. Its ACA courses include Level 1 to Level 3 SUP instructor certification and Level 2 to 3 SUP skills assessments, which is useful if you want to be assessed against a national standard.

4. Pirate Coast Paddle, Newport Beach

Location: Newport Beach. Offers: Guided SUP glow night tours.

The SUP Glow tour is a one hour guided group paddle at night on calm water, with waterproof LED lights fitted to each board. It was listed at $60 per person (USD, checked Sept 2026) and runs on select Fridays or Saturdays from June to August. Note the rules: you must be at least 15, previous paddleboarding experience is required, groups are capped at 20, and online glow bookings are non-refundable.

5. Tahoe Adventure Company, North Lake Tahoe

Location: North Lake Tahoe. Offers: SUP rentals, SUP and kayak delivery, clear kayak tours, full day kayak, SUP and bike tours.

Tahoe Adventure Company will deliver paddleboards and kayaks, which saves carrying boards to busy beaches. It says full day kayak, SUP and bike tours suit ages 8 and up, and private tours have an eight person minimum.

Wyoming and Oregon

6. SUPerior Paddlesports, Jackson Hole

Location: Jackson, Wyoming. Offers: Paddleboard and inflatable kayak rental with delivery.

SUPerior Paddlesports delivers boards to your accommodation for use on Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake, String Lake and other local waters, then collects them afterwards. Its paddleboard package lists a life jacket, pump, carry bag and a Grand Teton National Park boat permit, which removes one piece of admin. You still need to stop at the park’s invasive species inspection.

7. Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe, Bend

Location: Old Mill District, Bend, Oregon. Offers: SUP, kayak and canoe rentals, tours, lessons and a paddle shop.

Operating since 2000, Tumalo Creek rents paddleboards year round, according to the Old Mill District, and gives a safety talk covering river safety, stewardship and orientation before you set off down the Deschutes. Advance reservations are encouraged, and walk-ins are welcome.

Texas

8. EpicSUP, Austin

Location: 2200 South Lakeshore Boulevard, on Lady Bird Lake. Offers: Paddleboard and kayak rentals, group events and delivery.

Established in 2011, EpicSUP describes itself as East Austin’s original paddle dock and is one of the city-contracted rental concessions on Lady Bird Lake. It opens daily, from 10am on weekdays and 8am at weekends, and publishes its FAQ and rules online.

9. The Expedition School, Austin

Location: Festival Beach boat ramp, Lady Bird Lake. Offers: SUP, kayak and canoe rental, lessons, guided and group paddles, plus safety and lifeguard courses.

The Expedition School puts education and safety first, running water safety training alongside paddling. The City of Austin lists it as offering group paddling sessions, guided paddles and lessons, which makes it a good pick if you want instruction rather than just a board.

Florida

10. Manatee Paddle, Crystal River

Location: Crystal River, near Three Sisters Springs. Offers: Paddleboard and kayak rentals, clear kayak guided eco tours.

Manatee Paddle lists paddleboard rentals from $45 for two hours and $5 for each extra hour (USD, checked Sept 2026), with boards rated to 240lbs. Its guided clear kayak tours switch between a dry manatee viewing tour from 15 November to 31 March and a springs swim tour for the rest of the year.

11. Crystal River Kayak Company, Crystal River

Location: On the canals leading to Three Sisters Springs. Offers: Kayak and paddleboard rental, guided kayak tours, manatee swim tours and a dive centre.

Family-owned since 1996, Crystal River Kayak Company says its dock sits on the canal route, so you can reach Three Sisters Springs in about ten minutes without crossing the open water of Kings Bay. That makes it a gentle option for nervous first-timers.

12. Ichetucknee Springs paddling concession, Fort White

Location: South Entrance, Ichetucknee Springs State Park. Offers: SUP, kayak and canoe rentals, clear kayak tours and guided paddle tours.

The park concession listed paddleboards from $55 (USD, checked Sept 2026), including life vests, paddles and transport, with park entry charged separately. Boards are available for the Dampier’s Landing paddle, and guided tours run year round with manatees often seen in winter.

Before you book

Choose the provider by the water, not just the price. A sheltered spring run or city lake suits a first rental, while ocean, whitewater and night paddles belong with a guide and some experience. Check who holds which certification, whether your permit or park fee is included, and what happens if the weather turns.
