Check the law before you buy. Canoeing Ireland states you are required by Irish law to wear a 50 Newton CE/ISO certified buoyancy aid while taking part in paddle sports. It advises leaving details of your trip with someone on the bank, carrying a mobile phone or VHF radio in a waterproof case, and calling 999 or 112 (or VHF Channel 16 for the Coast Guard) in an emergency. Water Safety Ireland warns that inflatable paddle boards can be blown or swept out to sea by wind and currents in minutes, faster than a person can swim, and advises against using inflatables in open water.
